Understand an annual report in 10 minutes
Annual reports run to hundreds of pages. These questions get you to the numbers and the explanations behind them, with the pages they came from.
An annual report can easily pass 200 pages. Most readers need the same handful of facts. Here is a ten-minute routine to get them.
Minutes 1–3: the headline numbers
- “What were revenue and net profit this year, compared with last year?”
- “How did operating margin change, and why?”
- “How much cash does the company have at year end?”
It rose from 14.2% to 16.8%, mostly thanks to lower logistics costs.p. 23
Minutes 4–7: risks and outlook
Ask about the main risks management highlights and what guidance they give for next year. These sections often explain the numbers better than the tables do.
Minutes 8–10: check the source
Open the cited pages for any figure you plan to use. Tables in reports can be dense, and the page view lets you confirm the exact line and unit.
